New Partnership: The 610 Project
Auburn, AL: Third Lens Ministries is pleased to announce its newest Ministry Partnership with The 610 Project (www.the610project.org). Third Lens will provide conceptual design and budgeting services as part of Phase I.
The 610 Project is a Florence, Alabama-based nonprofit dedicated to the sustainable success of developing Haitian communities. The organization aims to empower the Haitian people through education, vocational training, and microenterprise efforts in such a way that communities will begin to thrive and provide for their own people and needs.
Just as people throughout our lives have empowered us to be successful, so too The 610 Project seeks to come alongside the Haitian people, empowering them to change their futures, communities, and country. 610 firmly believes education is key in breaking the cycle of poverty for Haiti’s future generations. Education, vocational training, and microenterprise are all part of The 610 Project and HAC’s future work in the Les Cayes community.
Les Cayes is located on Haiti’s Southern coast. Earlier this year Les Cayes and nearby Port Salut were directly hit by Hurricane Matthew. The 610 Project, along with partner Haitian American Caucus, was on the ground to provide over 10,000 meals and 200 pounds of relief supplies to the area. Furthermore, The 610 Project owns 15 acres where they plan to build a school and guesthouse in the next 2 years.
“Melissa and I began discussing this project about a year ago. I recently visited the site in February. Haiti is one of the most impoverished countries in the world,” said Brian O’Neil, Executive Director of Third Lens. “A 610 Project team was in Les Cayes to provide immediate relief after Matthew and has a long-term strategy to educate the next generation of Haitian leaders. We are honored to come along side their mission and support the building of a school that will have an immense impact on the region.”
“While walking the land in Les Cayes with Third Lens there was a moment where we turned from our work and were surprised to find we had an audience of about 25 Les Cayes community members. In that moment, the school we are working to build became much more than a project to me; it became a community of people whose faces and names we would learn, whose hopes, dreams and desires we would work alongside them to achieve. Their children would become our students and through the school we would have the incredible opportunity to invest in these kids, watch them learn, grow, and succeed. Working with Third Lens is key in doing just that.”
The 610 Project is hosting a fundraising event on April 7, 2017 to raise funds for the project. More information can be found at www.the610project.org/tables-of-ten-event/
