Just as people throughout our lives have empowered us to be successful, so too The 610 Project seeks to come alongside the Haitian people, empowering them to change their futures, communities, and country. 610 firmly believes education is key to the success of Haiti’s future generations. Education, vocational training, and micro-enterprise are all part of The 610 Project and HAC’s future work in the Les Cayes community. Les Cayes is located on Haiti’s Southern coast. Earlier this year Les Cayes and nearby Port Salut were directly hit by Hurricane Matthew. The 610 Project along with partner, The Haitian American Caucus, was on the ground to provide over 10,000 meals and 200 pounds of relief supplies to the area. Furthermore, The 610 Project owns 7 acres where they plan to build a school and guesthouse in the next 2 years.
The 610 Project’s work is done in partnership with Haitian American Caucus and is designed to empower and sustain. We invest heavily in two communities: Croix des Bouquets (where we support educational initiatives for 500+ students) and Les Cayes (where we are building a second campus). We focus on education, microenterprise development, and adult vocational training. That takes many forms, but one thing never changes: our belief that these communities are able to thrive when given the right tools.mIt remains to this day my strongest belief that education is key in breaking the cycle of poverty. When a child is given the opportunity for education, he is empowered to dream. She is taught her life is valuable beyond measure. Our work isn’t about us. It’s about the people we serve and the legacy they will create and leave for their families and communities. We are honored to be a part of that journey with these two communities and with our Haitian partners. We hope you’ll journey with us. – Melissa, Founder and Executive Director of the 610 Project
Les Cayes is the site of our future school campus where we’ll educate to 250+ students annually, offer adult vocational training, literacy and ESL training, and microenterprise workspace. The 610 Project works with Haitian partners, Haitian American Caucus, supporting educational initiatives for 500+ students at Ecole Shalom in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti.
