Building Identity

You are here: Home / Blog / Building Identity

March 7, 2014 by thirdlensmin

“Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it. ”
Psalm 22:30-31

These boys in San Pedro Sula, Honduras are excited to be enrolled at Escuela, Nuevo Destino (New Destiny School) opened in February for the 2014 school year. A private school extending scholarships to families stuck in the flailing public education system of Honduras, this project focuses on long term development for the next generation of this troubled city. This second location expands a partnership and model that was started 3 years ago connecting local teachers and administrators, international foundations and local pastors. This year over 500 children will build their identity as children of God  and become prepared as a generation to lead their family and communities down a new path.

New Destiny School was started by Wyly and Candy Gammon, after evaluating a grassroots scholarship program facilitating enrollment requirements for public education to many children in marginalized neighborhoods.  The program was enabling children to leave home and join the crowds of children marching in blue and white uniforms to school buildings, but education had long since been derailed by political agendas and the dedicated time and resources resulted ineffective.  Called to action, they found others willing to join them in creating a new path to a new destination.

Hosted and operated by the administrators of another private education institution, the funding comes largely from a German Foundation driven to find new ways to impact the future of Honduras.  These partners are the results of the Gammon’s commitment to tell their story and follow God’s hand.  As the two locations continue to expand enrollment and grade levels, land acquisition and facilities are part of the unfolding vision.  In a recent visit, Third Lens joined the Gammons  to hear this story.  As this relationship builds, the opportunity will become clear to connect others presenting skills  that will further this incredible project.
